Seattle Proposition 1: What's at Stake for Transportation

Seattle's transportation network depends on safe sidewalks, connected bike lanes, and reliable public transit. Seattle Streets Alliance urges voters to vote Yes on Proposition 1.

Prop 1 would renew Seattle's transit funding for ten years, supporting approximately 95,000 additional bus trips annually, including more service during evenings and weekends.

The measure would also expand fully subsidized ORCA passes from 10,000 to 22,000 qualifying residents. These services are particularly relevant to shift workers, seniors, riders with disabilities, young people, and households without access to a car.

More frequent service could reduce wait times, improve connections, and make it easier to combine walking, biking, rolling, and transit in daily travel.

Prop 1 would be funded through Seattle's existing transit sales tax. The measure would increase that tax from 15 cents to 30 cents for every $100 spent on taxable purchases. That's an additional 15 cents per $100, dedicated to supporting transit service.

Reliable transit is an essential part of a transportation system that gives Seattleites more ways to get around. Together with safer sidewalks and connected bike lanes, it helps make traveling without a car a practical option for more people.
